THE Inspector General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase has banned the use of commercial vehicles for police patrols and other such operations.
A statement issued in Abuja yesterday by the spokesperson of the Force, acting Assistant Commissioner of Police (Ag.ACP) Olabisi Kolawole said Arase gave the directive “due to the enormous negative consequences associated with such practices as complained by members of the public”.
It is common practice, as witnessed especially in some states, that police officers are seen carrying out patrol duties using commercial vehicles. This has on several occasions misled members of the public to walking into traps set by armed robbers dressed in police uniforms, operating with sometimes painted taxis.
According to the statement, “IGP directed that all police commands and formations should immediately stop the use of commercial vehicles/vehicles painted in known states’ commercial colours for police operations and patrol duties.”
It warned that, “abuse of this order by any police unit will attract severe sanctions.”
