World swimming governing body, FINA, appears to have taken the lead when it comes to reforms as it has voted to amend its constitution at its extra ordinary congress in Kazan, Russia.
The FINA move is coming at a time when many football stakeholders are clamoring for reforms in crisis ridden world soccer governing body, FIFA.
FINA in an email sent to Daily Sunsports disclosed that the congress endorsed the creation of the position of First Vice president, a position that was immediately filled by Kuwait’s Husain Al Mussallam.
The congress resolved that the President, First Vice President and Honorary Treasurer may be elected for a maximum of three full terms in the same post, a situation that would prevent any of the occupants of the position from perpetuating himself in office.
The amended constitution stated in part: “Any vacancy in the office of President shall be filled by the FINA First Vice President, until the Bureau decides, within 3 months, on the place and date of the Congress electing the new President.”
Delegates from 139 FINA National Federations, including Nigeria, approved the amendments that takes immediate effect.
The FINA Extraordinary Congress, was held yesterday ahead of the commencement of action in the 16th FINA World Championships taking place in Kazan.
